The moving picture of the ideal woman has changed dramatically over the last 50 years; it has gone from a sophisticated, movie star suit image to a seductive, vulnerable one. Advertise ments today communicate to women that they go solely for male gratification. Also, now every day women recover that they need to achieve this near-impossible body image to be bankable in society. The average dress sizing of women in the States is a size 12. But, the average dress size of a fashion model in America is a size 2. How does this affect womens self esteem? I have study ads from Vogue magazine from 1956 and today and compared the way they depict women. in that location are definitely extreme changes in the way advertisements pay off women. The fashion industry is ca development the image of women to self destroy one advertisement at a time.
In a recent advertisement for Flowerbomb perfume, the model is completely nude, and the only things cover are her face and genitals. She is also unhealthily skinny, and is hunched in a very vulnerable position. This advertisement is a direct shoot at the respect of women. It communicates that women are nothing more than objects to be used. She is so worthless in the eye of the advertiser that even up her face is covered, because its not worth being shown.
The advertiser is using her body to sell the product and catch the attention of readers, and gives her so little respect that they show her in an highly vulnerable position and cover up her face. When women or men flip through a magazine and look at this ad, what vibe does it give off? It sends the message that this girl is nude, vulnerable, and worthless.
In the 1956 Chanel advertisement, a woman and a man are go through the snow holding hands. The woman is wearing a long dress that goes down to her ankles, and the man is wearing a suit.
