The Commandment which is for Life (Romans 7.10): Sins Use of the respectfulness of Faith L. Ann Jervis

Abstract
Chapter 7 of Romans has been the focus of a vigorous disputation over whether capital of Minnesotas discourse is focused on the pre-Christ or the post-Christ experience. This discussion has not extended to the meter reading of 7.9-11, however. Scholars on both sides of the debate appeal to Gen. 2 and 3 to excuse these verses. At the same time, despite the fact that the Genesis composition takes place well before the giving of Torah, scholars understand the edict to which capital of Minnesota refers in these verses as a canon of Torah. This knotty but common reading is here called into question and a new proposal advanced: the commandment to which Paul refers in Rom 7.9-12 is the commandment inherent to look in Christ.
In the midst of one of his most contorted, dramatic and opaque passages, Paul makes the statement,
I was once alive apart from the lawfulness, but when the commandment came sin revived and I died and found that the commandment which promised life proved to be death to me. For sin, ?nding opportunity in the commandment, deceived me and by it killed me (Rom. 7.9-11; my translation).
Though ch.
7 of Romans has elicited an extended and energetic debate, oddly about whether the discourse concerns a pre-Christ or a postChrist experience, the interpretation of vv. 9-11 has been remarkably consistent. Both sides of the debate regularly regard Paul to here be referring to the Fall, the typical assumption being that the the nevertheless person who could say I was alive once without the law would be Adam or Eve.1
