For years, Sweetwater has tried unsuccessfully to annex areas north of the metropolis to boost its tax base.
Finally, city leaders got their wish.
In a special mail-in election Tuesday, voters approved Sweetwaters annexation of roughly two square miles that includes Dolphin Mall.
The results were tallied Wednesday at the Miami-Dade County Elections De placement.
Some 858 voters participated, with 68 percentage in favor.
``We are extremely happy with the results, said city manager Manny Maroño.
The annexed area is roughly bounded by Northwest seventh and 25th streets, 107th Avenue and Floridas Turnpike extension.
The annexation volition friend transform Sweetwater from a mostly residential community to a city with more industrial land and commercial properties that will boost its tax base.
``This is changing the history of Sweetwater for the better. We have tripled in size, Maroño said.
Doral was also interested in the annexed area at one time.




But Doral council members agreed in August to cadence back and let Sweetwater go ahead with its plans.
Miami-Dade commissioners passed an ordinance in October supporting Sweetwaters actions.
``As of today, the Dolphin Mall area belongs to Sweetwater. It is part of their municipal boundary, said Jorge Fernandez, coordinator of municipal services for Miami-Dade County.
The annexed area hail the county approximately $3.5 million to service, but only generated an estimated $2.9 million in revenues during the 2009-10 fiscal year
``In essence, the county isnt losing anything, Fernandez said.
