In fact, ragtime became such a sensation that "publishers labeled even unsyncopated music from the name to spur sales" (Wolbert). The African slaves brought their music with them and took in significantly from European music--more or less, depending on a genre--in order to create the music that the twentieth century would recognize under numerous labels including blues and ragtime. There is some documentation of the imported music because, unusually, slaves in New Orleans have been allowed to retain weekend musical meetings during the Place Congo (now the approximate website of Louis Armstrong Park). These mass dances featured drummers, groups of stomping dancers, chanting women's voices, and, as modern drawings show, "percussion and string instruments virtually identical to individuals characteristic of African music" (Gioia 4).

The story doesn't end here. The beauty, enthusiasm, and even haunting qualities of ragtime are recorded in print and in sound recordings so that, should we be so foolish as to forget this art, future generations will likely be able to rediscover it and it's going to influence the music of another generation.
